Hawai‘i Appleseed's 10th Year Anniversary fundraiser, Artists for Appleseed, was held on October 2, 2014 at the Pacific Club. More than 40 local artists offered their art for sale to benefit Appleseed. Catholic Charities Executive Director Jerry Rauckhorst was honored for his years of service leading CCH in its fight against poverty.
Hawai‘i Appleseed participated in a screening of Inequality for All, an award-winning documentary directed by Jacob Kornbluth and featuring former U.S. Labor Secretary in the Clinton Administration and Common Cause board president, Robert Reich. Hawai‘i Appleseed and the University of Hawai‘i William S. Richardson School of Law co-hosted a Symposium on Health and Nutrition Policies at the law school on Nov. 8, 2013. The panel featured national guests Judy Waxman of the National Women's Law Center and Jim Weill of Food Research and Action Center as well as local speakers Professor Hazel Beh of the Law School and Appleseed's own Jenny Lee. On November 8, 2013, Hawai‘i Appleseed hosted two breakfasts with our national honorees Judy Waxman of the National Women's Law Center and Jim Weill of Food Research and Action Center. Ms. Waxman primarily spoke about the Affordable Care Act (ACA or Obamacare) and the opportunities it will provide us in Hawai‘i, especially women. Mr. Weill discussed nutrition programs, wage, tax and other public policy strategies at both the federal and state levels to reduce hunger, poverty and inequality. On May 16, 2013, Hawai‘i Appleseed Center and students from the University of Hawai‘i School of Architecture will present the results of their housing design competition featuring ultra-affordable, modular microunits aimed at addressing Hawai‘i's severe affordable housing shortage and homelessness crisis.
